What Are The Worthwhile Elements Of Modern Design?

Great design is a field so vast and varied that one designer’s outlook can be much different to another professional, and they can both be completely ‘correct’ in their approach. It’s important to understand that when considering the design of fashion, home renovation or building, graphic design, marketing a brand, the particulars may be very different, but the essential and fundamental philosophies behind it are the same. It is here that all of the constituent elements are united, and there we can go about applying our value judgments.

But what are the practical elements of great modern design, and how should they influence the world around us? To discuss this with any kind of coherency, we will need a platform for examples, and we believe that custom homes and renovations can be a great place to start. An effective custom home builder knows many things, that design is often contextual depending on the circumstances in which it must take place, and a complete solution is always required when hoping to address matters like this. As far as those things are concerned, we would like to posit the following advice:

Practicality

Practicality is often the name of the game in modern design. That’s not to say that aesthetic upgrades are not appreciated, but if they rarely add anything to the design, then it can be considered a surplus requirement. We can see this ideal in little things, like trendy modern money holders such as ridge wallets or protective clips, or even phone cases that allow for the storage of items. Practicality and usefulness will always remain the primary driver of product design, and so it should be.

Sustainability

Sustainability in design is becoming more and more of an important thing to consider, and also, it’s increasingly in-demand. It’s important to consider how you can curate your approach to sustainability, be that in the messaging you give through your design, the materials you use, the practicality you consider, or considering the entire life cycle of the product or environment you are designing, rather than just what will guarantee usefulness. Sustainability is starting to lead practical innovations such as breakaway ring-holders to prevent harm coming to sea animals, as well as developing safer and more practical standards when it comes to natural materials or those that degrade naturally.

Minimalism

Minimalism is not necessarily the art of subtracting things without cause, or keeping the aesthetic simple. However, it is the art of streamlining, of ensuring that added frills are not necessary, as they can sometimes conflict with the intended purpose of a product. Look at Apple’s design economy and language. For the most part, it’s very simple. It is often quite similar from year to year, also. However, it is sleek, elegant, and often quite practical. There is little added, and this heightens the professionalism. Modern design trends often use this approach to help what’s there really sing, or to add a slight bit of aestheticism which becomes more impactful as a result. Sometimes, less is more.

With this advice, we hope you can utilize the most worthwhile elements of modern design.
