Want Lovelier Skin? Break These 5 Bad Habits

There probably isn’t a woman alive who doesn’t want the loveliest skin possible but the sad fact is that too many of us don’t realize that our bad habits are the biggest obstacle to promoting a healthy, youthful glow. If you have been looking in the mirror thinking that it’s about time you do something to fix the sad shape your skin is in, try breaking these 5 bad habits. Believe it or not, a few minor (and some major!) changes can make all the difference in the world.

1) Smoking Is the Epitome of Bad Skin Habits!

It can’t be said enough just how bad smoking is for your skin. Yes, we all know that smoking causes everything from cancer to a number of other ailments, but you just don’t know how bad it is for your complexion. Not only does smoking yellow your skin but it causes a breakdown in collagen leading to premature wrinkling. If you must have your nicotine fix, why not try an electronic cig or a vaping device?

According to most experts, it is not the nicotine that does the damage but rather the thousands of chemicals released when tobacco is burned. Begin with e-cig starter kits that give you a choice in strength and have everything you need to be ‘smoke-free.’ (Mind you, not nicotine free if you must have your fix, but at least you won’t be subjecting yourself to those horrid chemicals!)

2) Over-cleansing or Cleansing with Harsh Exfoliators

It has been drilled into our heads since pre-puberty that the way to avoid zits from an excess of oil in the skin is to thoroughly cleanse your face. Unfortunately, too many moms went way too far in expounding the benefits of regular facial cleansing. Too much of a good thing is very, very bad in this case.

Cleansing too often can dry the skin, leading to wrinkles and dry patches that turn rough and red and overuse of harsh exfoliators is just as bad. If you must use an exfoliator, please make it a gentle one formulated for use on the face.

3) Not Enough Quality Sleep

Of course you are aware of the fact that the body needs a certain amount of deep, comfortable, high-quality sleep in order to function properly. However, are you aware of the fact that a great number of biological processes only take place during restful hours? Many of those hormones and natural chemicals the body secretes are done so during sleeping hours so make sure you get plenty of deep, restful sleep each and every night.

4) Improper Use of Sunscreen

There are sunscreens and then there are sunscreens. If you live in a climate where you are exposed to an inordinate amount of ultraviolet rays, you will want to use a really good sunscreen. Here again, keep in mind that not all sunscreens are created equal. We are not talking about the SPF value, but rather the parts of the body the sunscreens are formulated to protect.

Many good quality makeup manufacturers put sunscreen in their foundation but if you don’t wear a base, you will want to find one that is formulated for use on the face. Some types of sunscreen have fragrances, in fact most do when formulated for use on the body, so find one that is made specifically for use on the sensitive skin on your face. The SPF value you choose should also be determined by the shade of your skin. Obviously those with fairer skin more prone to burn will need a higher value.

5) Failing to Wash Makeup off Before Bed

You have just come home from a grueling day at the office, an afterhours meeting with a client and just had time to grab a quick bite to eat before hitting the sack. Stop right there! Never, ever climb into bed before washing the day’s makeup, dirt, grease and grime off your face. Not only does it clog the pores but it can lead to wrinkles as well.

If you just don’t have the energy to make it to the sink, try a high quality facial wipe meant for makeup removal. That mascara under the eyes, foundation and blush are meant to come off at the end of the day so don’t skip this step – ever! If you want lovely blemish-free skin that literally glows, a nightly wash is just what the doctor (esthetician?) ordered.
