Is it ok to put artificial plants at home?

artificial plants

Many people would like to extend the green atmosphere from the garden into their interior. So we go to the garden center and spend a fortune on nice pots and plants for the home. Those pots will survive, but the plants sometimes have other plans for the future. It’s just the question of how your green fingers are doing.

Fortunately, there is a solution for everything. Would you like to give your interior a green touch, without having to wake up at night and realize that you forgot to water the plant again? We receive lot of questions if it’s ok to put artificial plants at home. Here are some ideas.

What are artificial plants?

The name actually says it all: artificial plants are plants that are specifically made for decoration. The plants are not real, but made of different materials such as plastic. The big advantage is therefore that the plants are not alive (and therefore cannot die). You do not have to maintain the plants with water and plant food, which saves you a lot of stress, money and time.

With artificial plants you invest once in a beautiful specimen and matching pot and from that moment on you don’t really have to worry about it anymore. How cool is that?!

The quality of artificial plants

Would you like to purchase artificial plants for your living room, bedroom or home office? Prepare yourself, because the choice is huge. With artificial plants you want to get as close as possible to the look and feel of real plants. I would immediately look at the more expensive segment, especially because the quality and appearance of artificial plants is often nicer than cheap artificial plants. But that is of course different for everyone (and depending on your budget).

It is up to you to determine what kind of artificial plant you want. Do you want the height or the width? Or maybe both? There are very beautiful, large artificial plants for sale with which you can immediately fill a large part of your interior. Always take a good look at the photos and the leaves of the plant, because you can often see from that whether it gives the look you want (and whether it looks real, despite the fact that it is an artificial plant).

Also look at artificial plants with color difference in the leaves, because this gives the natural look of real plants. A Monstera with different shades of green looks a lot more real than in one color. This does not only apply to this popular plant, but to all plants.

Now, of course, there is a difference between a natural color gradient in leaves and color difference for the sake of color difference. Always look closely at the photos to determine whether the artificial plant matches your expectations. And is the artificial plant not quite what you are looking for after delivery? It may not be very durable, but of course you can always return an artificial plant and order another one. So you’re not stuck with it.

Tip: fill the pot with coconut cover or wood chips

If you have bought an artificial plant, you are not there yet. You also want a nice pot for around the artificial plant. This is easy with real plants: you decide which plant you want, buy a pot based on the size of the roots and the plant and fill the rest with potting soil. It is slightly different with artificial plants. Potting soil for an artificial plant is of course a bit too much.

Fortunately, there are also other options for filling a jar. You could place a smaller flower pot upside down in the pot and place the artificial plant on top of it. You can also work with material like Styrofoam or bubble wrap to fill most of the jar. You can fill the upper part of the pot with wood chips or coconut cover for a natural look.
