Interview with Zachary Green founder of LumAware eco-friendly EXIT signs

I’m passionate about both safety and eco-friendly technology. With the EXIT signs we can do both!

I had the privilege to interview Zachary Green founder of MN8 LumAware ( Zachary Green is a former US Marine and firefighter that specializes in energy free eco friendly EXIT signs. Since these signs do not need electricity they don’t generate excess carbon dioxide. It’s great how his invention replaces traditional electric EXIT signs. With over 100,000,000 electric EXIT signs in the USA you can imagine the impact it would make if they where all replaced by LumAware energy free EXIT signs.

Kroger is starting to replace their EXIT signs with LumAware being aware of the fact that these signs never need any batteries or light-bulb and they contribute to zero waste to landfill sustainability initiatives. They are maintenance free and besides being sustainable they save you a lot of money over time compared to traditional electric signs. You can find the EXIT signs for sale on The Home Depot. Read the interview below to find out more.

Can you tell us what’s special about LumAware?
We use photoluminescence (its like glow in the dark on steroids) to make EXIT signs that never need batteries, lightbulbs, batteries or electricity

What motivated you to start an eco-friendly business?
I wanted to help my fellow firefighters find a way to better see each other in the dark with light emitting materials that didn’t have to rely on batteries or electricity. I started selling products out of the trunk of my car and eventually quit my full time job, maxed out my credit cards and invested my life savings to grow the business. I eventually raised several million dollars of venture financing and now have over 70,000 firefighters using our products. From there we started to make EXIT signs out of the same materials. I’m passionate about both safety and eco-friendly technology. With the EXIT signs we can do both!

What green issues are you most passionate about?
Not having to electrify something that doesn’t need to be electrified. Most people use electric EXIT signs because they think that is the only kind of sign on the market (there are over 100,000,000 in use in the USA alone) By not using electric, you reduce carbon dioxide output. Also you don’t need batteries or lightbulbs that eventually end up in a landfill. Zero waste to landfill sustainability initiates are also drivers.

What advice would you have for other aspiring social and green entrepreneurs?
Focus more on the WHY rather than the WHAT and the HOW. Just because you have a great idea or a great product, without great marketing, no one will ever know about it.
