Interview with shoe designer Patrick Hill, founder of Elegant Rae

Never get into this industry with the idea of making tons of money. I witness many failures of people who have that type of mindset including me at once. The idea of Elegant Rae came after my failure projects.

Who inspires you the most in the fashion industry?
There are so many that I think of and I want to say all which would be a cliché answer. I admire what Marc Jacob, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean Combs have done to trends in the fashion industry growing up. I haven’t worn Versace or Armani to be quite honest because I couldn’t afford that type of fashion at the time. However, when I hear Versace and Armani; it meant great accomplishments within success. It’s like when you wear a Versace and Armani; it almost feels like you part of success. The moment where if I buy Versace and Armani; I feel like I made it as such as an accomplishment to own two great legacy brand products. These people who I mention inspire me based on their status and their commitment into the fashion world. The things they do are incredible and it’s almost effortless that they continue to thrive respectfully in today’s fashion industry.

shoe designerDo you have a research process when you start your shoe collection?
Yes. Before they are submitted to the manufactory for production, I would often post up some of the shoes designs on my social media accounts like Instagram, twitter, and Facebook. I wanted to see what type of buzz each shoe will receive before I can proceed on sending them to production. If the shoes didn’t get much buzz as far as likes; I scratch it off from producing it. The shoes that do passed through several reviews from the audiences on social media site; I push them out for production. As each shoe is design, I would post it up to see what people think of them before I move ahead to send them into production. Sometimes, I would just send them to production without using social media. In reality, I would use social media for my research, and also opinions from stylists to regular people to push the product out. If you happen to want a peak at the next design just go to elegantrae16 on Instagram, elegantraebrand on Twitter, and elegantrae on Facebook. That is where you see new designs being posted.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started Elegant Rae?
Never get into this industry with the idea of making tons of money. I witness many failures of people who have that type of mindset including me at once. The idea of Elegant Rae came after my failure projects. The beauty about Elegant Rae is that it was more of an organic idea than any ideas I had before it. When I realize the potential for Elegant Rae; I became committed to bringing this vision to life. Almost like my Frank stein creation and I brought it to life. The biggest lesson that anyone should take is not to confuse your dreams with money. If you feel passionate about a dream or idea; never mix money within your true desire.

Where do you see your shoe collection in 5 years?
Hmm, that is an interesting question. I don’t see it being in the leagues of Jimmy Choo and the rest of women shoe collections. I never have a high expectation but just the dedication to keep the shoe collection going. I am hoping through five years that my shoe collection will still be around. Things can change within a year and I am hoping that it will continue to carry on. I believe sustainability is a must in this competitive industry. If I work hard enough going through the ups & downs; it will become a recognizable enough to keep it going. I will continue to make a different shoe collection each season. It depends on the customers to keep it going in five years.
