Studies show that cell phones carry up to 18 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

If you are like me, you use your cell phone every day. But do you clean your cellphone regularly? I’ll be honest, I don’t clean it that often. I actually never think of it but studies show that cell phones carry up to 18 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Now imagine holding a toilet seat to your face! I honestly wasn’t aware of how dirty cell phones really are until I got the opportunity to interview Robert Howard, the inventor of the self-sanitizing phone case. Most cell phones carry abnormal high numbers of coliforms. Bacteria’s that are responsible for diarrhea, flu and pink eye.

If you don’t want to get sick or get skin infections, irritation or acne due to cell phone use consider to support his campaign on Kickstarter. Robert howard use to work in the medical field and has witnessed the effects of bacteria on patients and how bacteria can impact recovery. That’s how he came up with this great invention.

The Viocase includes a germ killing additive called Biomaster this material is made up of anti-microbial silver ions. It inhibits the growth of bacteria up to 99.99%. The case that is designed for the iPhone 6 and 6s utilizes the power of the sun to keep the cell phone screen germ free. UV lights use a light saber to slice apart the bacteria’s nucleic acids. Not to forget the self-sanitizing phone case also keeps your battery charged. Read the interview to find out more about this multi-functional cell phone case.

How did you come up with the idea for  Viocase?
As a bit of a germaphobe myself, I was actually thinking about purchasing one of those UV light products to sanitize my phone. They are basically a box you put your phone in when you feel the need. The problem is that it is a stationary device, not something you carry around with you. I thought it would be great if their was a case that stayed on the phone and allowed you to sanitize as often as you wanted. That’s when the idea was born.

Why do you call it multifunctional?
It has a lot of benefits when compared to a traditional case. Outside of the germicidal features, it offers an extra battery to charge your phone, and the cover that houses the UV lights serves as a screen protector as well as a convenient stand.

How does the self-cleaning work?
The anti-microbial material built into the plastic of Viocase will keep itself sanitized at all times. It fights germs 24/7, without requiring anything from the user. For the cell phone screen the user can just simply activate the UV lights as many times as they feel necessary throughout the day.

How are you better than the competition such as Soaphone?
While the end result is the same (sanitization of the phone), the products have different roles. Viocase is meant to stay on the phone at all times, providing protection just like a normal case. It is basically a phone case on steroids.

What is your mission?
To provide a healthy solution to something that has not been addressed on the cell phone case market thus far. The truth is our phones are disgusting, and even for those of us that try it is difficult to keep them clean. Viocase makes this process super easy.

What has been your greatest achievement so far or most proud of?
When I graduated from my Master’s program. It was a very challenging two years. I am an Anesthesia Assistant, so I basically put people to sleep for a living.

What’s your best advice for other tech entrepreneurs who are starting a business?
I just believe in doing something different. If you have something unique that fills a need, the rest is just filling in the gaps.
