Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do
My name is Lauren Brown & I see the world in a different light. I was born & raised in Edson, Alberta on an acreage with wildlife and beautiful Alberta landscapes all around me. I have been taking photos for as long as I can remember, whether it be on a disposable camera, a digital or a camera phone. I think I went through 4 or 5 cheap digital cameras throughout my childhood. About 4 or 5 years ago my family purchased a beginner DSLR Canon for Christmas for me and I was completely terrified of it! I found a small introduction to DSLR Photography day course that my local learning society was putting on a few months after receiving my camera. It basically taught us how to take our cameras off of AUTO mode and we were able to learn the different main functions of what makes a great image and the rest is history! I am completely hooked, and love creating images that portray how I see the world.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I am inspired by many of the immensely talented photographers we have here in Alberta, and many across the Globe! Paul Zizka is an absolutely amazing landscape/adventure photographer. His aurora images & nightscapes are second to none. John E. Marriott is an incredible wildlife photographer & he is a huge advocate for wildlife conservation as well which I find admirable. Dave Brosha, who I have had the pleasure of meeting & taking a workshop with is a beautiful landscape & portraiture photographer. You can really feel the emotions he is trying to evoke in his images & understand the story he is trying to tell. Aside from people in the photography field, my family are huge inspirations in my life. My parents always instilled a love of wildlife & the outdoors in me since i was a child & my husband is the ultimate outdoorsman and we are always running off on another adventure in nature somewhere!

What is your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement so far would be winning a couple of online awards for a few of my images as well as being published in a small section of Canadian Geographic! The Raw Artists REFLECT Showcase is going to be an incredible addition to my list of achievements and I hope it helps me get my name & my work out there for others to enjoy!

Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Take workshops, expand your knowledge! Take constructive criticism and listen to it. We all start somewhere & we’ve all been that new & eager photographer who just can’t wait to have their images published in big magazines or on the walls of prestigious businesses or in the media. Take your time, do your homework & above all else, STAY PASSIONATE!

What do you have planned for the upcoming RAW Edmonton REFLECT showcase on March 14th?
I am so excited for the REFLECT showcase at Edmonton’s Union Hall! I have a few things planned for the showcase. I will definitely have some prints available for purchase. I’m hoping I can really get my name out there for people to keep up with my work and my adventures. I will have beautiful postcards with some of my favorite images on them along with all my contact information & social media handles that I will be giving out! All in all I just hope that the exposure from the event helps to express the beauty I see when I look through my lens.
