Interview with Marla Bee Designs

I am often dropping off free jewelry in various places. My hope is that it will reach someone in need of some cheering up, or a sign that things are going to be ok. I want to make someone’s day so that one day that jewelry piece can be looked at with a smile.

braceletWhat inspired you to start your business?
I had a nostalgia moment and decided to try to make some beaded bracelets that were popular in fourth grade. My grandmother had heard what I was doing and offered me some of my great-great aunt’s beads.  At first I was iffy about it, but then I saw them and I was immediately enthralled. She asked if I wanted to take them home to try crafting with them, and I found beading was actually something I was pretty good at.

What is the brand’s philosophy?
Every bit of life has meaning, and Marla Bee Designs reflects that in many ways. The actual jewelry has a meaning behind every piece, whether it be historical, gemological, or symbolic, every jewelry design has a meaning behind it and hopefully that will speak to my customers. I had one customer who was so happy to find that I made a bracelet with his and his girlfriend’s birthstones, and that thrilled me.

I also give meaning to my business by keeping it eco-friendly with shipping products and by recycling old pieces into new.

My favorite way that I stick to the philosophy is that I am often dropping off free jewelry in various places. My hope is that it will reach someone in need of some cheering up, or a sign that things are going to be ok. I want to make someone’s day so that one day that jewelry piece can be looked at with a smile.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?
I suppose it depends on what one considers an achievement. My new year’s resolution was to get a functional website up and running, and after weeks of work, I finally finished it. I am also thrilled that I was accepted into school to study more techniques of jewelry making. So I guess so far, I have two large things I am very proud of.
