Interview with Jazz singer Anna Varga

I’m the boss of my company. It’s always better to be a boss than to work for someone else. Especially for a woman.

Tell us about yourself and what you do
My name is Anna Varga and I am the owner of an Independent Jazz music label. My inspiration comes from anyone who came to the big city with a dream and made it a reality. Even business people because there is artistry but also a business side.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Independent artists, musicians and photographers inspire me Anyone who has a voice. My greatest achievement so far is getting the mainstream music industry to recognize Jazz music again. A lot of great talent was going unheard and unappreciated until I lent my voice and image. I had a popular image. My image took a life of its own and I had copyright issues with companies I never was involved in. I started my band The Anna Varga Sextet to move traffic away from those sites.

What is your greatest achievement so far?
The music industry is very image conscious and I caught the eye of executives. That opened the door for artists who were being overlooked.

Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
My advice for anyone trying to break in to the music industry is that it is better to break new ground rather than trying to break in. I’m the boss of my company. It’s always better to be a boss than to work for someone else. Especially for a woman.
