Interview with Japa Mala Beads

We currently have over 160 mala bead designs, and our malas are made from some of the most unique and hard to find gemstone beads that we source from all over the planet.

What products does Japa Mala Beads sell?
We primarily sell mala beads. A mala is similar to a Catholic rosary and is used by yogis and Buddhists as a tool for meditation and chanting mantras or prayers. We also sell beautiful cloth bags and carved wooden boxes to store mala beads or other sacred items.

What sets Japa Mala Beads apart from other similar companies?
We have been mala bead experts since 2004 and have handmade over 10,000 mala beads and have sold thousands of imported malas from India and Nepal. Our USA-made malas are “designed by artist and strung by a yogi” which gives them a strong sense of beauty as well as a very intentional and mindful production. We currently have over 160 mala bead designs, and our malas are made from some of the most unique and hard to find gemstone beads that we source from all over the planet. Japa Mala Beads is also a very eco-friendly brand, and we have integrated green choices in our business from the very start.

What motivated you to start Japa Mala Beads?
I became very frustrated and disappointed when I was looking for a new mala to replace one I had that had broken. After a lot of searching, I realized that it would just be easier to make my own mala instead of settling for a cheaply made one. I was so happy how that first mala turned out that I made several more and then decided to launch a company manufacturing and selling mala beads.

How did Japa Mala Beads become an eco-friendly business/brand?
I have had a keen interest in the environment since college. This interest was spurred by the yoga principles and philosophy that I had been studying since practicing yoga at 19 years old. The yogic concept of non-harming motivated me to become a vegetarian and to look at other ways to live a lifestyle that created minimal harm to the planet.

What green issues do you address by the way you run your business?
We have integrated eco-friendly practices in all aspects of our business and are always looking at ways to do more for the planet. We do our best to minimize our footprint and reduce our carbon emissions. By striving to have a minimal overhead and to produce minimal waste, we also help our bottom line.

What are the methods and practices you utilize to minimize your environmental footprint?
We try to run our business with as little impact as possible on the earth. We use carbon neutral web hosting to run our website, and we have opted not to have a traditional storefront and instead run our business in a very energy efficient workspace. We use as many recycled products as possible, especially for our shipping packaging and we reuse and recycle as much as possible.

What advice would you have for other aspiring social and green entrepreneurs?
Firstly, don’t be afraid to ask for more eco-friendly options from your suppliers, and encourage them to provide you with what will make your company greener. Actively seek out business relationships that share your same values.

Give yourself some flexibility when starting and know that you will be able to create higher environmental standards as you grow and refine your product or service.
