If I have to explain what it feels like to produce a track to someone who has never done it, I often say it is most similar to cooking – you need the technical know how in order to get almost anything done but you need the artistry too to make it ‘taste’ good.
Tell us about your music
I like to make electronic music that’s upbeat, fun and interesting, often with a darker edge. I know that probably sounds like a pretty broad goal, but I’ve never been much of a fan of genres. I enjoy listening to many of electronica/EDM’s subgenres, particularly house, electro, DnB, dubsteb and bigroom, I like a lot of non electronic music as well. When it comes to making music, I keep all the music I love in mind and see where it takes me. In the past I focused mainly on the big, bombastic club orientated tracks whereas with my new EP (Steampunk Cybercrunk) I’ve taken a more instrumental, experimental approach – although a couple of the tracks would still sound quite solid in a club. This is actually kind of going back to my roots production wise, so it was kind of refreshing to make it.
What do you like most about your profession?
I genuinely think that music is the purest form of expression. Most other forms of art have only moved from being primarily descriptive to largely conceptual in the past 100 years or so. Music has been like that since the beginning (although, I know there are some notable exceptions). I love the unbridled creativity that modern production allows, it almost feels transcendental. On a slightly less crazy level, I also love the deep technicality that creating music involves, it really stretches your geek muscles. If I have to explain what it feels like to produce a track to someone who has never done it, I often say it is most similar to cooking – you need the technical know how in order to get almost anything done but you need the artistry too to make it ‘taste’ good.
What’s your favorite album from another artist?
Ooh tough one, I’m really bad at favouritism. Truly great electronica/EDM albums are not that common (as opposed to great tracks which there are thousands of). I’d probably have to go for Birdy Nam Nam – Manual for successful rioting, Marco V – 200V or maybe Justice – Cross
What song of yours are you most proud of?
Haha, another tough one. Trigger Happy still puts a smile on my face whenever I hear it. I’d probably have to go for Basch though, it’s sounds exactly how I wanted it to … like being hit by a wall of sound 😉
What is the formula for success in the music industry?
Umm, not sure about that one. I’m not even sure if anyone knows at the moment, there is such a radical shift in the way that people listen to and distribute music that the whole industry is a little topsy turvy. I’d say if you want to make money … try to get licenced, if you’re looking for respect … try to get all over social media and perform/DJ/promote as much as possible, if your priority is getting famous … go on X-factor or make a sex tape (you can decide for yourself which is more debasing)
