Interview with Full Stack web developer Yiran Zhou

The tech industry grows very fast. To keep up with speed, you shouldn’t spend one day without learning something new.

How did you come up with the idea for your website?
My husband and I wish we were gypsies haha, we love traveling and have been to multiple countries, while on the road we always dreamed of a platform to search through travelers in the same city, filter them by our preferences, and invite fun people to join us exploring the city (it’s cheaper this way most of the time too). We also wished to be invited into a local’s home for a traditional meal. Those ideas just kept “haunting” me until I was provided with the opportunity to create the “Squad It” web app.

What did you use to build the website?
React, Node, PostgresSQL, Massive, Express, Auth0, Socket.io, AWS S3 and of course, CSS.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Being able to build the whole web app and figuring out how to use two new technologies: Socket.io and AWS S3 within 3 weeks. I wasn’t expected to build the whole thing within the tight deadline, but I still pushed forward and completed the project. It was awarded “The Most Technical Project” in my cohort.

What’s your best advice for other coders who wants to get into the industry?
First – Learn, practice, learn, practice and learn. The tech industry grows very fast. To keep up with speed, you shouldn’t spend one day without learning something new.

Second – Be humble. It’s ok to ask questions, but make sure you know what you are asking and ask the right question.

Third – Find opportunities to collaborate with others to build projects. Working with other coders is not only fun, being able to collaborate is a very important skill to have as well.

Where can our readers find the website?
The demo can be found at: https://squad-it.now.sh. The site is hosted with a free hosting service currently, so it might take few minutes to get the server started.
