Interview with fashion designer Nathan Slate

I was a rebel at fashion school, never listening always doing my own thing and that’s the road I have taken with my brand, Nathan Slate.

What inspired you to start your brand?
I went to an all boys catholic school where they never taught us boys how to cook or sew, sexist I know…. i then pushed myself at college to learn something new, in terms of arts i decided to study Fashion design, I fell in love with it. I always found it hard to find clothes that suited my personal style, through studying Fashion I can now create what I want.

What is the brand’s philosophy?
I was dubbed “a fashion maverick” – I was a rebel at fashion school, never listening always doing my own thing and that’s the road I have taken with my brand,  “Nathan Slate” doesn’t follow binaries or codes or boundaries or rules.
“Nathan Slate” creates its own world where trends and social pressure doesn’t matter

What has been your greatest achievement so far?
I have dressed celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, but that was all working/designing for other brands, this I don’t talk about much because I want to carve my own brands path and not name drop for the other brands I worked for. This ultimately was the reason I started my own brand, I was fed up with seeing my own hard work being praised under other designers names.
