Interview with artist Paul Olson

Never let yourself fall into a rut and always look for someone who is going to give you new opportunities to try to do things in a way you’ve never done them before. Always be asking yourself – “Is this my artistic style or is this just a habit that I’ve developed?”

Tell us about yourself and what you do
I am an artist who works in traditional paint and drawing techniques. I also teach art classes. I teach classes in painting and life drawing at the moment.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I have been inspired by a great many artists. I find wisdom in examining the works of fine artists in world-renowned museums and in the sketches of young children in my drawing classes.

What is your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement up to now is to be able to both teach art to people who live fine art and to create it myself.

Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Never stop questioning your own process. Never let yourself fall into a rut and always look for someone who is going to give you new opportunities to try to do things in a way you’ve never done them before. Always be asking yourself – “Is this my artistic style or is this just a habit that I’ve developed?”

You feature artists on your Facebook page every week can you tell us more about it?
I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on my “Featured Artist of the Week” bits. THANK YOU! I’ve seen other feeds do something similar, but they always seem to post the same old “dead white guys” that are (in my opinion) overdone. My thought was that I (mostly) want to show you some artists you’ve probably never heard of with PLENTY of diversity and at least 50% female.

I’m very aware of what short shrift women get in visual art. I think it’s ridiculous that in most museums, art by women make up less than 1/3 of the collection, and yet in every art school and art class in the country – 2/3 of the students are women. It really gets on my nerves that so many museums have more nudes OF women than they have pieces of art by women artists.
