My parents are my biggest inspiration, and because just for the simple fact that they’re are NOT just a perfect match or married couple, but because over 45yrs of marriage somehow they made it work with two kids and not being perfect.
Daraja began composing music at the age of 13 gathering inspiration from his father’s extensive music library. To this day, the artist attributes his diverse musical influences to Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Miles Davis, Willy Nelson, Sade, 2-Pac, Jodeci and Paul Hardcastle even though in his words he adds, “I listen to everything I can get my hands on.”
Today, Daraja’s musical style is best known for its rap compilations layered on top of jazz and R&B-influenced electronica music. His lyrics speak of his personal experiences whether that be love, loss, self-reflection, politics or good times; the themes are relevant to common human emotion.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My parents are my biggest inspiration, and because just for the simple fact that they’re are NOT just a perfect match or married couple, but because over 45yrs of marriage somehow they made it work with two kids and not being perfect. So when u see that same formula on so many levels as you’re growing up with them dealing between each other, it does kinda….(well at least my experience) it does shape you’re understanding for creating, being patient, and handling business to some extent. And I guess doing music is like being in a relationship, so if you’re really , its gonna show in the music and you’re relationships in life.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement so far is still being in the music industry after 12 years and being able to do it even more on my own terms. Meaning I do what I want. I don’t have to conform to any A&R Rep, Record label, or any management company. Everything i do now is ALL me and the artist I work with on My Block Recordz. 100% straight, no chaser.
Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Be patient and have a plan. No matter how many business reps & artist come and go in you’re life, keep doing YOU. Try not to burn bridges and take care of the people who take care of you.
