Interview with artist Azarias

The first and practically only condition for good style is having something to say. So meet people, read books, travel abroad, do that thing you want to do for years.

Tell us about yourself and what you do
Hi, my name is Azarias and I’m an artist based in the very creative city of Lille, in the north of France. It struck me from a very young age that art was offering me an area of freedom like no others and I started very soon to explore many art forms (music, photography, painting, graffiti, digital art, ..) even if it took me some time to decide that I would end up dedicated to art (Family pressure, you know what I mean!). Since then I have been exploring all kind of things. These past few months I worked on digital installations, graffiti murals, paintings and sculptures. I guess it finally echoes this freedom I’m looking for.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?
There are so many that it is hard to name them. But my main sources of inspiration come from philosophy, ethnology, linguistics or literature. Books and ideas from people like Levi-Strauss, Henri Bergson, Charles Sanders Peirce, Umberto Eco, David Foster Wallace or Thomas Pynchon opened up new horizons for me.

What is your greatest achievement so far?
Hard for me to speak about achievement but I’ve been lucky enough to work with talented people and very challenging projects: realtime video performances with Jeff Mills, Coldcut or Tahiti 80, a mural in tribute to Sonia Delaunay, a digital installation generating abstract artworks from a dancer’s body moves, …
But I hope that my greatest achievement is still to come. I still have a lot of ideas and projects to work on in the future.

Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
I hear a lot of people giving the same advice: “find your own style”, “create your personal style”. It always reminds me of this phrase of Schopenhauer: “The first and practically only condition for good style is having something to say”. So my advice would definitely be: meet people, read books, travel abroad, do the thing you’ve been craving to do for years, … in a nutshell, experience things and you will definitely have something to say.
