How to Stay Focused on Your Degree When You Study Online


The e-learning industry is booming; whether you are a teacher or a student, you can guarantee that you’ll find the program you’re looking for on the web. Online degree programs today range from bachelor’s degrees in engineering, nursing or marketing to masters in health informatics, business administration, project management, and everything in between. Additionally, online degree programs have lower tuition fees and provide students with a superior level of freedom, flexibility, and control that’s difficult to achieve on-campus.

But, studying online can also have its drawbacks. For many students, the main one is the risk of falling into procrastination and losing focus without a professor leading the way in the classroom. If this sounds like you, read on for our top tips on staying focussed when studying online.

Tip #1. Study Away from Home

Being able to study from the comfort of your own living room, kitchen, backyard or even your bedroom is one of the biggest perks of enrolling on an online degree. But, having all your home comforts to hand can sometimes be a curse disguised as a blessing.

When you’re in a familiar environment with plenty of distractions such as your TV, internet or somebody calling your home phone, it can often be more difficult to knuckle down with your degree work. So, find a local library, coffee shop or shared working space that you can use to get away from the distractions and focus.

Tip #2. Improve Your Lifestyle and Diet

When you’re studying for an online MSHI program or similar, it can be so easy to fall into the trap of neglecting your health and fitness. Since you’re studying from home it can be more difficult to join college sports groups, for example, and unless you live close by, it can be tricky to get access to a campus gym as an online student.

But, looking after your health will work wonders for your energy and focus when it comes to your studies. So, even if you only manage to go for a walk each day and ensure that you eat a healthy breakfast every morning, small changes make a big difference.

Tip #3. Stick to a Schedule

Unlike studying on-campus, taking an online degree means that you can study when you like – whether that’s during the day or in the middle of the night. But the problem with this is that you can quickly become too flexible and misjudge the amount of time that you have. As a result, you could end up putting off your degree work and leaving it until the last minute, creating more stress.

Instead, work out a realistic study schedule that fits well around your lifestyle and commitments, then stick to it as strictly as you can. Although it’s perfectly OK to allow some flexibility (after all, that’s why you’re studying online!) getting into a routine will help you to make the most of it.

The flexibility and freedom of taking an online degree can be very advantageous, but to succeed, it’s important for students to remain focused.
