How to Pick the Right Online Dating Site for You

dating, online dating

Forget the bar, gym and awkward set-up – when it comes to finding a potential mate, the Internet is by far the hottest spot. But with hundreds of online dating sites and more than 40 million visitors on a regular basis, how do you know where to start? The first big step to finding online dating success is picking a site that’s right for you. Like shopping for the perfect pair of jeans, there are always certain brands that are a better fit than others. Some sites are more suited for those looking for casual relationships while others may be for the more marriage-minded. To help you find your “perfect match” in an online dating site, went to love experts Alex Wise and Ira Chernoff for tips to finding love at the click of a mouse.

For Singles Who Want a lot of Options:

Cost: Free to browse, search and post a profile. However, to message you must subscribe. A one-month membership is $29.99.

The Rundown: Featuring a wide range of adult singles of all ages across the globe, this site is the most popular and highly trafficked matchmaking site out there. Each user creates a profile and selects their preferences for matches. Then all communication is done through a private email network. The only downside to this site is that one could get easily overwhelmed by the large amount of users.

Why it Works: This site “allows users to swim in a giant dating pool so it’s hard to run out of options. And because of the sites broad appeal, there is more than one someone for everyone, no matter what your preferences or quirks” says Alex.

“It’s also a great site for those who are looking for all kinds of relationships i.e. companionship, flirtation, casual dating and marriage. It allows you to choose what you are looking for” says Ira.

For the Marriage-Minded Single:

Cost: $59.95 for one month, $39.95 per month for three months, $19.95 per month for a full year

The Rundown: “This service is designed specifically for people who are looking for serious relationships. Unlike other sites, eHarmony relies on compatibility matchmaking and pairs people based on results gathered from a detailed questionnaire members must fill out upon joining the site” says Langburt. The only fallback is that joining this site is a bit on the pricier side, but for those looking to get serious the money may be worth it.

Why it Works: According to Alex, “eHarmony is a serious relationship-minded site. It is for marriage-minded people.”

But that’s not all, Ira says, “The beauty with this model is that it uses a scientific algorithm to connect people based on shared characteristics, beliefs, values, emotional health and skills thereby increasing the likelihood of success.”

For the Young Single Looking to Casually Date:

Cost: Free

The Rundown: Similar to in terms of functionality, Loveawake allows the user to upload pictures, fill out a short questionnaire and an “About Me” section.

Why it Works: “The primary benefit of Loveawake is that membership is free! The site tends to attract smart and edgy 20-somethings and is ideal for those who are starting out in a new city, straight out of college or looking to date rather than settle down in a long-term relationships,” says Ira.

For the Single Looking for a New Approach:

Cost: Free

The Rundown: “Unlike eHarmony, this site is fueled on the premise that opposites attract” says Ira Chernoff. Instead of being scientifically matched with someone who is similar to you this site takes a different approach and pairs you with someone who has different interests.

Why it Works: They DO say opposites attract. Also, for many people, failed relationships are caused by dating the same type of people over and over again. With this site it is almost guaranteed that you will meet a different type of person which you would not normally select for yourself.

For the Single Who is Searching for a Match with Similar Values: and

Cost: JDate – Basic membership is free, paid membership is $24.99 per month, Catholic Match – Basic membership is free, paid is from $12.49 per month

The Rundown: Although we have only selected two sites here, if you are looking for a faith-based online environment to start a new relationship there are a variety of matchmaking sites for all types of  religious beliefs. JDate and Catholic Match operate similarly to in that you can create your own profile, upload pictures, etc … Catholic Match in particular is very community based with forums and message boards.

Why it Works: “These smaller niches sites are a great resource for singles who care about religion and/or have a strong sense of culture, community and heritage. The ability to connect with people who share similar backgrounds, traditions and values makes individuals feel more at home and at ease when online dating,” says Alex.
