Ready to start downloading movies? Then read on!

Installing uTorrent

The first step of this process is installing uTorrent. We’d recommend downloading it from the official site and installing it as normal. All of its default settings should work fine on Windows.

Some people have reported uTorrent on Mac not working. If this is happening to you, we’d recommend exploring the alternatives out there. While it’s the best torrent client on Windows, there are some other options available on Mac.

Once it’s installed, open the program and check it out. This will give you a good opportunity to get some hands-on experience before you start torrenting. Take a look at settings and change any that are relevant for your network, then move on to the next step.

Finding Torrent Sites

Before you can learn how to download a movie using uTorrent, you should know where to find torrents. While The Pirate Bay used to be the go-to torrent index, there are better alternatives around today.

If you are exclusively looking for films, we would recommend looking at YTS. This is the index for the YIFY movie group. This group is famous for its high-quality and high-volume movie uploads: if a film is relatively famous, it will have a YIFY rip.

If you’d like to browse other categories as well as movies, the following are great general torrent sites:

  • 1337X, which started small but has since grown dramatically
  • Rarbg, a Bulgarian index with a huge selection of categories
  • Torrentz2, which has grown despite early technical issues

If you are looking for an anime film or series, we would also recommend NYAA.

Whichever site you use, look at the torrent’s comments! If there’s any malware lurking in the download, someone else will likely have already said. The comments will also give you a good idea of the movie’s video and audio quality.

How to Download a Movie Using uTorrent

Once you’ve searched for and found the movie you want to download, it’s time to start. You’ll likely have one of two options available to you. One will be a torrent file, the other a magnet link.

Both of these serve much the same purpose. When you download a torrent file, you’re not directly downloading the movie. Instead, the file tells your computer how to download the files from other people who are hosting the film.

A magnet link, while working in a slightly different fashion, does the same thing.

Once the file or link is opened, you’ll be presented with a menu. This will ask you which files you would like to download and where you’d like to save them. By default, they will be saved to your downloads folder.

Once you click Ok, the torrent will begin downloading. Your uTorrent movie download may seem slow at first, but it will soon speed up.

In uTorrent’s interface, you’ll see several different columns relating to your download. It will tell you how much you have downloaded so far, how many peers you are connected to, your download speed, and ETA, which is when the download will be completed.

Congratulations! You now know how to download a movie using uTorrent. In the next step, we’ll show you how to increase your safety and privacy while torrenting.

How to Use uTorrent Safely

In many countries, downloading certain material such as copyrighted materials using uTorrent is illegal. If you live in one of these countries, there are certain ways around this, to avoid getting sent piracy warning letters and potentially being taken to court.

The best way to avoid these measures is by using a VPN. A VPN is effectively a secure tunnel that encrypts your internet traffic. Nobody, not even your ISP, can see what you are downloading.

You should look for a VPN that doesn’t keep any logs of users’ activity. Some of the best examples of this kind of VPN include:

  • NordVPN
  • Private Internet Access
  • TorGuard
  • ExpressVPN

You will have to pay for this service, but it is well worth it for peace of mind. You should avoid free VPNs. These typically keep logs and sell customer data, making them extremely unsecure.

A Quick Guide to Torrenting Terminology

We mentioned the complex terminology of torrenting in the intro. In this section, we’ll give you a quick guide to the lingo.

Peer: a peer is someone who is downloading the film at the same time as you. They send you pieces of data, but cannot supply a complete film.

Seeder: a seeder is someone who has finished their download and is now uploading the film. They can supply any required data, and as torrents do not have dedicated servers, they keep the network running.

DHT: a Distributed Hash Table keeps torrents alive, even without a tracker. They help connected seeders and peers.

Client: a client is a program you use to download torrents. For example, uTorrent is a client.

Piece: torrents divide files into pieces that are then distributed via the BitTorrent protocol. Your client downloads these pieces and puts them together into a whole file.
