Exodus World Premiere at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Exodus tells the story of the transition from our physical world to the spiritual afterlife, shining a light on the relationship between the police and black American citizens. Exodus is choreographed by celebrated hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris. Voted one of the most influential people in the last one hundred years of Philadelphia history, Mr. Harris has received several accolades, including the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, the Governor’s Arts Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, and an honorary doctorate from Bates College.

Rennie Harris’ mom just past away, one day before his birthday, which inspired him to create the story and choreography for Exodus. Its about a spirit transitioning from this physical existence to the next. This performance also discusses what’s happening in modern America politically, economically and spiritually.

With a mixture of hip-hop, Shakespeare, poetry and gospel music, Rennie Harris rates an inspiring world premiere, using the genres as a celebration of life, but also as a protest. His show asks the important question of why we’re here and forces the viewer to take a moment and appreciate everything that surrounds us.
