8 ways to relieve pregnancy discomforts

Your body is working double time during pregnancy, for you as well as for the little one inside you. Sometimes, all the processes taking place inside will cause discomfort or irritation but don’t worry, it is completely normal. If anything seems to be particularly alarming, you can always check with your gynaecologist or maternity hospital. But unfortunately, some symptoms like morning sickness are a part and parcel of pregnancy. Even the best maternity hospital in Pune can’t make those go away!

Below, we have put together a list of natural ways to deal with pregnancy discomforts so that your aches can be eased, at least till the baby is out! Read how to prepare for pregnancy below.

  1. For abdominal pain: This pain is usually caused by stretching of abdominal muscles and ligaments when your uterus expands to accommodate your baby. A warm bath or shower can ease the pains and regular exercise will strengthen those muscles. Take care to avoid exercises while lying on your back after the first trimester.
  2. For morning sickness: Try ginger tablets, dry ginger ale, peppermint or ginger tea. You can also eat a healthy snack like fruit or yogurt before going to bed at night.
  3. For backache: During pregnancy, the joints of your lower back and pelvis will experience strain due to the extra weight of your uterus. Try a massage, aquarobics or regular back exercises to ease back pain. Using a firm or hard mattress can also help.
  4. For headache: Pregnancy triggers headaches in the first few weeks. You can try doing pregnancy yoga to relax your mind and body. Taking a paracetamol in the recommended dose is also considered safe for pregnant women.
  5. For indigestion: 8 out of 10 women experience indigestion as some point during pregnancy due to pressure on the tummy or increasing hormone levels. This can lead to nausea, vomiting, bloating and heartburn. Making small lifestyle changes like eating smaller meals or cutting out certain foods will help you deal with indigestion. You can also take antacids in safe doses.
  6. For breast discomfort: Your breasts will grow during pregnancy to prepare for lactation. Wear a bra which gives enlarged breasts proper support and avoid stimulating your breasts. If they leak, try wearing nursing pads in your bra to minimise the discomfort.
  7. For bladder and bowel problems: During pregnancy, you may experience constipation, needing to urinate frequently and haemorrhoids due to hormonal changes in your body or your baby’s head pressing against your bladder. To prevent it, eat foods high in fibre like wholegrain cereals, fruits and vegetables and move your body regularly to improve circulation. Try cutting out liquids in the late evening so that you get up less to urinate at night, but make sure to drink plenty of water during the day.
  8. For cramps and swelling: Cramps may occur in your feet and calves during pregnancy due to the extra weight you’re carrying around. Your joints may also swell because your body is holding more fluid than usual. Gentle foot exercises like rotation and stretching, avoiding standing for long periods and drinking plenty of water can help reduce the discomfort.
