Festival fashion is a fun way to express yourself and wear things you wouldn’t normally wear. However it also has to be comfortable and up to withstanding some mud or desert dust.

Coachella takes place across two weekends in April every year. It is beloved of supermodels, actors and influencers, and obviously their photos are taken. The star-studded annual event is located in Indio, California. It’s one of the hottest music events on the global calendar, but the fashion is key too.

It’s not just the headliners, which this year included Billie Eilish and Harry Styles, whose looks are talked about. Coachella is the place where the new casual looks are paraded, like Rockstar Originals.

Many people keep their eyes peeled for what the hot young stars are wearing. It informs festival style for the rest of the summer.

Denim is always a must have for a festival wardrobe. It’s versatile and hard-wearing so whether there’s rain or shine, it’s a good addition.

Which Denim Trends Were a Hit at Coachella 2022?

So who wore it best this year? And which way were they wearing their denim for the festival? Here are the latest festival trends set by the festivalgoers at Coachella

1. Colored Denim

Why have it in plain old blue? YouTube star and coffee entrepreneur Emma Chamberlain rocked a red denim skirt, which looked surprisingly cool.

Match it with a luxe fabric like Emma did, feathers or velvet look great. Alternatively, make it the focal point and dress around it.

Shanina Shaik had on dark stonewash Ser.O.Ya jeans for Coachella.

Some people had on multi-colored denim, and we say why not? Tie dye your jeans for a real festival look.

2. Denim on Denim

This look is pretty much seen year on year at Coachella, proving that it never goes out of style.

Most of the kids these days sadly won’t remember Justin (Timberlake) and Britney’s iconic AMA look. Take it from us that it was a stand-out moment.

If you want to look classic 90s, which is in this season then don:

  • A denim shirt and teeny denim cut-off shorts
  • A denim jacket and denim halter
  • Denim cut-offs with a denim bandana

Rina Sawayama chose denim on denim (with fringes) for her performance.

3. The Denim Jumpsuit

This is a brave choice for a festival goer, but it looks great. If you have access to some VIP toilets and are 100% that there’s no mud in your forecast, go for it.

4. Print or Embellished Denim

Denim with sequins, buttons, massive flowers or a cowhide print? Yes, to all of these.

Why have boring jeans or a skirt when you can get handy with a craft kit?

This means that you can make your own festival look even if you’re on a budget. Take some old jeans, cut them up and add some glittery sequins in multi colors!

Or you could be like Anitta and get your diamond-encrusted denim outfit from Roberto Cavalli x Fausto Puglisi. James Charles also channelled a diamanté look in L.A. Roxx and Y/Project.

5. Wear ‘em Baggy

Baggy jeans were seen on some of the hottest stars such as Kylie Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and Fai Khadra. Get them from Carhartt like Hailey or rock some vintage Levis a la Halsey.

Peyton List also loved the baggy look, as did Justin Bieber when he performed on stage.

6. Tiny Denim Shorts

Is it a trend if it never goes away? Tiny denim shorts are a must-pack for any self-respecting festival goer.

This year, they were spotted on:

  • Bella Thorne
  • Chloe Cherry
  • Ariana Madix

Easy Ways to Recreate Coachella Looks

The great thing is that you probably already have a denim staple in your wardrobe. Add a fringe or some diamanté to get it bang up to 2022. If in doubt, or playing it safe, buy a vintage denim shirt to throw over your other festival looks.

Now you’re ready for a summer full of festivals!
